The traditional festivals of Kasos (Panigyria) are the ultimate expression of the island’s rich musical and dance heritage. They are not just religious events but the heart of Kasian social life, bringing together locals and visitors in a unique atmosphere of joy, music, and hospitality.
Every year, during major religious feast days and local celebrations, the courtyards of churches become vibrant gathering places. Guests are welcomed with live music, traditional dances like the Sousta and Zervos, and endless feasting that lasts until dawn. What makes these festivals truly special is the free traditional food and local Kasian wine, offered generously to everyone.
The preparation for a Panigyri follows customs passed down for generations. In large outdoor kitchens, fires burn under big pots, and men in white aprons prepare slow-cooked meat, pilaf, and crispy fried potatoes. When the food is ready, a human chain forms to serve everyone—starting with women and children, then men—according to tradition. Meanwhile, the sound of the lyra and laouto fills the air, as musicians sing mantinades and invite everyone to dance.
The most famous festival is the Feast of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary on August 15 in the village of Panagia, attracting over 2,000 visitors. After the morning liturgy and the procession of the holy icon, the feast begins. The menu includes dolmadakia, meat in tomato sauce with pilaf, and fried potatoes, with a unique touch of cinnamon sprinkled on the pilaf. After the meal, the courtyard transforms into a dance floor, with music and singing continuing until sunrise.
Beyond these official feasts, spontaneous celebrations often take place in local cafés and taverns, where musicians play traditional tunes on the lyra and laouto, creating unforgettable moments of authentic Kasian culture.
